# Exposition

As mentioned in [the terminology section](/how-to-tell-compelling-stories-out-of-interviews/story-concepts/terminology.md).

> Exposition is the information that grounds you in a story: who, what, where, when, and why" is about "**giving away what the audience needs, when the audience needs it**.

It's important to be clear on where to use exposition in the story crafting process. It is best to first identify the `story` and then use exposition to refine the presentation.
